Brakes

Question

Show me how you would check the parking brake for

excessive wear.

Answer

Demonstrate by applying handbrake to show that when it is fully applied the ratchet holds and the car remains secure. Also explain that the brake should not be at the end of its working travel.  If the handbrake is released and re-applied, use the footbrake to secure the car! You don't want to run someone over before you! start

Question

Tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car.

Answer

Explain how you would operate the brake pedal and make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc. Or that you would ask someone to help by pressing the pedal or checking the lights.(You can ask the examiner to check the lights for you while you press the brake pedal). Note:

Some vehicles have a 'bulb failed' warning light. Mention this if its relevant to your test vehicle.

Question

Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Answer

There should be resistance felt when the brake pedal is pressed (when the car is stationary). The brake pedal should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested by pressing the footbrake pedal gently as soon as the car is moving. The car should not pull to one side.

Question
